It means several things. For instance in FPS <3 can mean thank you, or it can even be a way to taunt other players that you may have shot. It doesn't necessarily mean love.
(after you shot someone) : <3

Their response: I'll get you back!

(They shoot you back): <3

Or say someone almost shot you but a teammate shoots them first: <3 (teammates name)

a lame way for a boyfriend/girlfriend to express affection to one another through media without actually acknowledging love, and so forth, eliminating any possible ridicule from friends.

Most commonly used in text to show one's affection towards somone or somthing.

A common way to replace the word 'love' or 'heart' usually throught text or internet profile comment.

A symbol used in place of the word "heart". Mostly used by pathetic scenesters. Only use this if you're willing to be laughed at and made fun of.

The symbol has inspired other equally pathetic phrases such as "less than three" and "<three", which have been invented by lame emo/indie/pop punk fans and scenesters. In the end, "<3", "less than three", and "<three" all mean the same thing.
